Trying to decide if I need new rotors or not on the explorer. I know for a fact I need new pads but I’m not sure if rotors are neccesary. The rotors are smooth to the touch with no damage other than the rust around the outside

Totors are relatively cheap, not much more than grinding them - I’ve just purchased new ones on the last couple cars I’ve had and have been very happy.

To know for sure you need a caliper gauge. New rotors aren’t much more than getting them ground, so I always swap them out.

How long do you plan to keep it? If it’s another year or more, then swap rotors as well, you can get some grommet coated ones maybe? It keeps the rust on the inside from rearing up later on, worth the few extra bucks IMO. I’ve never replaced rotors and later thought it was a bad idea. But if you’re looking to sell this off soon, then just slap some pads on there and lube up all the slides. And back to if you’re keeping it, maybe bleed the brakes as well? I do mine at every pad/rotor change. Cheap insurance to get fresh fluid in the lines.
